Experimentally validated atomistic simulation of the effect of relevant grinding parameters on work piece topography, internal stresses, and microstructure

Abstract In this work, we present a fully atomistic approach to modeling finishing process with the goal shed light on aspects of work piece development microscopic scale, which are difficult or even impossible observe in experiments, but highly relevant for resulting material behavior. large-scale simulative parametric study, varied four most grinding parameters: The material, abrasive shape, temperature, and infeed depth. order validate our model, compared normalized surface roughness, power spectral densities, steady-state contact stresses, microstructure proportionally scaled macroscopic experimental results. Although grain sizes vary by factor more than 1,000 between experiment simulation, characteristic parameters were reasonably reproduced, some extent allowing predictions quality degradation due tool wear. Using experimentally validated studied time-resolved stress profiles within ferrite/steel as well maps microstructural changes occurring near-surface regions. We found that blunt abrasives combined elevated temperatures have greatest complex impact multiple processes mutual competition here.
